Tilda Swinton coming in ‘Man to Man’ in 2027

NEW YORK—Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton will make her New York stage debut in Man to Man, opening Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in February 2027. The production also marks her return to the stage after nearly 40 years.

Previews begin February 21, ahead of an official opening on February 28, 2027. The revival will play a strictly limited eight-week engagement.

Tilda Swinton reprises her acclaimed role

Written by Manfred Karge, Man to Man follows a woman in 1930s Germany who puts on her deceased husband’s trousers and assumes his identity. As war and dictatorship transform her country, she struggles to survive hunger, hardship, and humiliation.

Swinton originated the role of Ella/Max in the acclaimed 1987 UK premiere at Scotland’s Traverse Theatre. The production subsequently transferred to London’s Royal Court Theatre in 1988.

Now, four decades later, Swinton returns to the role under the direction of Stephen Unwin. The creative team also reunites her with designer Bunny Christie. Anthony Vivis provides the translation, while Unwin contributes revisions.

London success ahead of New York premiere

The revival is currently playing London’s Royal Court Theatre, where tickets sold out within two hours. Moreover, the production has attracted a waitlist of more than 30,000 people.

Before arriving in New York, Man to Man will also play limited engagements at Scotland’s Traverse Theatre and Germany’s Berliner Ensemble.

Producers Brian and Dayna Lee, the Royal Court Theatre, Berliner Ensemble, and Madison Wells Live present the New York production by special arrangement with the Lucille Lortel Theatre.

Presale tickets become available October 21, 2026, at 10 a.m. ET. General ticket sales begin October 22 at 10 a.m. ET.
