NEW YORK— Tony Award winner Jonathan Groff will return to Broadway next spring in The Amish Project, a solo play about tragedy, compassion and forgiveness.

Written by Jessica Dickey and directed by Sarna Lapine, the production begins previews February 10, 2027, at the Broadhurst Theatre. Producers Robert Ahrens and Tom Kirdahy will bring the play to Broadway.

A story of tragedy and forgiveness

Inspired by the 2006 Amish schoolhouse shooting in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, The Amish Project explores how a close-knit community responds to unimaginable loss.

Rather than focus solely on the tragedy, Dickey examines the extraordinary compassion that followed. Through multiple characters, the play asks a difficult question: How do people find the strength to forgive the unforgivable?

The story also holds a personal connection for Groff, who grew up just minutes from where the tragedy occurred.

“Sarna Lapine sent me The Amish Project last year and I was floored by the urgency and potent poetry of Jessica’s writing,” Groff said.

Groff takes on a new Broadway challenge

Groff returns to Broadway following acclaimed performances in Merrily We Roll Along and Just in Time. He won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Franklin Shepard in Merrily We Roll Along.

Meanwhile, Lapine previously directed Broadway productions of Sunday in the Park with George and Call Me Izzy, starring Jean Smart.

Playwright Jessica Dickey’s play first appeared at the New York International Fringe Festival. It later premiered Off-Broadway at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in 2009. Since then, theaters across the country and internationally have staged the work.
