Sharon D. Clarke will be performing and paying tribute to Don Black as he receives The Olivier Special Award for contribution to theatre. In a career spanning six decades, Black has written lyrics for theatre productions including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love and Whistle Down the Wind, and for music artists including Quincy Jones, Lulu, Meat Loaf and Michel Legrand.

Don Black will be presented his award by Lord Lloyd Webber and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. The Duchess will be making a poignant speech about the importance of live theatre.

Ian McKellen will be honoured in his 80th year for his Ian McKellen On Stage tour which visited over 80 theatres, with profits going towards different causes at each theatre, from repairs to outreach programmes and talent development.

The show will also feature performances from nominees Sam Tutty, star of Dear Evan Hansen, and Miriam-Teak Lee, star of & Juliet.

Julian Bird said, “This is not how we had originally planned to celebrate this year’s outstanding Olivier nominees, but like so many others we have adapted to these challenging times. I am thrilled that we have been able to safely pull together this programme that will hopefully engage and inspire audiences at home whilst reminding them of the talent and vibrancy within our theatre industry.

In response to the pandemic, we have set up the Theatre Artists Fund spearheaded by Sam Mendes to help the many talented freelancers in our industry who are in financial hardship. As part of the broadcasts there will be a special feature with Sam and some of the recipients of the grant.”

Update for West End theatre audiences

Statement from the Society of London Theatre (SOLT)

LONDON–London’s West End looks forward to welcoming audiences back into theatres as soon as performances can safely resume.

To give our customers some clarity, we have been cancelling performances across the West End on a rolling basis, in line with the latest advice from the Government.

We are now extending those cancellations until Sunday 28 June.

This does not mean theatres will reopen on 29 June; if further cancellations are necessary they will continue to be announced on a rolling basis. Different theatres and productions are likely to reopen at different times.

Ticketholders for affected performances do not need to do anything. They will be contacted by the organisation from which they bought their tickets to arrange a refund, credit note or exchange for a later date.

We are grateful to customers for the patience they are showing during this challenging time for our industry. With 300,000 people visiting West End theatres in a normal week, it’s a major undertaking to process refunds, exchanges and credit notes, particularly when many staff are working remotely. Please rest assured that we are all working as quickly as we can and we appreciate the on-going support of our audiences.

Society of London Theatre (SOLT) is a not-for-profit organisation representing the London theatre industry.

Cancelled performances

West End performances are now cancelled until at least 28 June.

These cancellations have been agreed across London’s commercial theatres on a rolling basis, in line with government advice.

Based on individual circumstances, some theatres have chosen to cancel performances beyond 28 June and many are not taking new bookings over the summer.

In difficult circumstances, venues are currently working with thousands of customers enquiries. Ticketholders are asked to do nothing for the moment – venues and ticket agents will contact customers directly to process refunds, exchanges and credit notes as soon as possible.

Further guidance about the industry’s future plans will be shared when this is available. Separate announcements related to specific productions may be made by venues or production teams.

Official London Theatre’s website has detailed information about upcoming live streams, online activities and other content from theatres and shows during this shutdown: https://officiallondontheatre.com/get-your-theatre-fix/

The decisions to reopen theatres will be made based on government and scientific advice on gatherings and events. Different theatres and productions are likely to reopen at different times.

Facts and figures on London’s West End

Under normal circumstances, the annual London theatre audience is over 15.3 million (2019 data).

In 2019, 18,364 performances took place across London’s theatres, bringing in £799m in box office revenue and generating £133m in VAT payments for the UK Treasury.

There are several companies which own and operate multiple West End theatres, and these companies will often make announcements which apply to all shows in their venues. Independent theatres may also make statements relating only to their venue.

The main venue groups are:

Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG)

Delfont Mackintosh Theatres

LW Theatres

Nederlander Theatres

Nimax Theatres

THEATRE CLOSURES – PRESS STATEMENT

LONDON–Following official government advice issued today (Monday 16 March), which stipulates that people should avoid public buildings including theatres, we regret to announce that SOLT and UK Theatre member venues will be closed from tonight, to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

The theatres will remain closed until further notice and will re-open as soon as possible, following government recommendations.

Audience members for a show that has been cancelled will be contacted by their ticket providers and are entitled to a refund. Ticketholders are asked to bear in mind that customer service teams are currently extremely busy.

Julian Bird, Chief Executive of SOLT and UK Theatre, said:

‘We are extremely grateful to all of our audiences who have continued to support us for as long as they can, and to theatre staff across the country who have worked so hard in recent weeks to ensure the safety and enjoyment of audiences. Closing venues is not a decision that is taken lightly, and we know that this will have a severe impact on many of the 290,000 individuals working in our industry. In these uncertain times, SOLT and UK Theatre remain committed to helping provide vital support for those in need, and hope we are able to welcome audiences back to our theatres before too long.’

Many theatres that have been forced to cancel performances are charitable enterprises, and while ticketholders are all entitled to a refund for cancelled performances, those who can afford to do so are encouraged to donate the cost of their ticket to show support for the theatre industry.

Over the coming weeks, SOLT and UK Theatre will continue provide updates to the industry and the public as the situation changes, sharing current government and NHS advice.

LONDON–The nominations have been announced for this year’s Olivier Awards, which take place on Sunday 5 April at the Royal Albert Hall.

& Juliet, a new British musical using the pop songs of Swedish hitmaker Max Martin to retell Shakespeare’s classic love story, has nine nominations – including Best New Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Set Design and Best Costume Design.

Trevor Nunn’s revival of the 1964 musical Fiddler On The Roof, which opened at the Menier Chocolate Factory before transferring to the West End last year, is nominated eight times, with a Best Director nod for Nunn, as well as acting nominations for Andy Nyman and Judy Kuhn. There are also seven nominations for new musical Dear Evan Hansen, which opened on Broadway in 2016, and six for the Richard Eyre-directed revival of Mary Poppins currently running at the Prince Edward Theatre.

Leading the nominations for plays with five each, including Best Revival, are the Young Vic production of Death Of A Salesman and Rosmersholm at the Duke of York’s Theatre and Cyrano De Bergerac at the Playhouse Theatre. Uncle Vanya at the Harold Pinter Theatre and Present Laughter at The Old Vic each have four nominations.

This year’s Best New Play nominees include A Very Expensive Poison by Lucy Prebble, based on a book about the murder of Alexander Litvinenko, and Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt, the epic story of a Viennese Jewish family at the start of the 20th century.

In the Best Actor category, Toby Jones is nominated for his performance in Uncle Vanya, James McAvoy for Cyrano De Bergerac (his fourth nomination), Wendell Pierce for his West End debut in Death Of A Salesman, and Andrew Scott for Present Laughter.

In the Best Actress category, Hayley Atwell is nominated for Rosmersholm, Sharon D. Clarke (who has now been nominated six times across all four acting categories) for Death Of A Salesman, and Juliet Stevenson (also now a six-time nominee) for The Doctor, an Almeida Theatre production coming to the West End in April. Phoebe Waller-Bridge receives her first acting nomination for Fleabag, which was Olivier nominated in 2014 for its run at the Soho Theatre.

Petula Clark, last Olivier-nominated in 1981, receives a Best Supporting Actress in a Musical nomination for her role as the Bird Woman in Mary Poppins. She is joined in the musical acting categories by several first-time nominees, including Miriam-Teak Lee for & Juliet, Zizi Strallen for Mary Poppins, Sam Tutty for Dear Evan Hansen and Jac Yarrow for Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Julian Bird, Chief Executive of Society of London Theatre and Executive Producer of the Olivier Awards, said:

‘2020’s nominations demonstrate the range of productions, talent and enterprise on our stages over the last year, with a mix of breadth and diversity that showcases the modern British theatre landscape. We look forward to celebrating all this incredible, world-leading talent on Sunday 5 April.’

The Nominees’ Celebration will take place on Friday 13 March at The May Fair Hotel (part of Edwardian Hotels London, official hotel partner for the Olivier Awards), in association with Olivier Awards partner Cunard.

The Olivier Awards ceremony will be hosted by Jason Manford, and broadcast via official media partners ITV and Magic Radio. Further details to be announced soon.

LONDON–UK Theatre and SOLT have been working closely with members and with Government on Brexit preparations since the referendum result announcement in 2016.

Now, in addition to our broad range of support for the theatre sector to prepare for Brexit, we have successfully applied for a Government Brexit Business Readiness Grant, which we are able to use to help the theatre sector prepare for a possible No-Deal Brexit scenario.

In the lead-up to 31 October, UK Theatre and SOLT will be running a series of free, open sessions delivered by expert teams, with the aim to:

Equip attendees to plan for their business to exit the EU under a No-Deal

Provide an overview of the broader impact of exiting the EU

Give attendees an opportunity to ask questions of experts and share information with each other

Signpost attendees to other relevant sources of information to help them prepare

Held in Manchester, London, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol and Birmingham, the sessions are free to attend and open to everyone working across the theatre sector – including those who do not belong to any association or membership body.

We are working with organisations including OneDanceUK, the Independent Theatre Council, the Association of British Theatre Technicians and the Federation of Scottish Theatres to reach out to a wide network of theatre professionals, organisations and sole traders across the UK, inviting them to attend.

Sessions will cover key areas identified from the results of four Brexit surveys conducted by UK Theatre and SOLT over the last two years. The topics that will be covered are:

Movement of people (short term and longer term, including immigration)

Movement of freight (sets, equipment etc.)

Supply Chain (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods)

IP (copyright and trademarks) and Data

Q&A with panel

Two additional specialist sessions (Preparing for a No-Deal Brexit: Touring in and out of the EU – movement of people and equipment) have also been programmed to help companies whose business involves importing and exporting work and workforce to and from the EU.

For anyone interested in attending a session, booking opens soon via the UK Theatre website.

This funding is only available for No-Deal planning and we are following current Government advice on how to prepare as a sector.
