Broadway veteran Kelli O’Hara and Oscar nominee Rose Byrne are a hilarious dynamic duo as two booze-swilling best friends in this knockout revival of Noël Coward’s 1928 comedy Fallen Angels.

Mr. Coward’s play hasn’t been on Broadway since 1956. That production featured a revised script by Mr. Coward, moved the story from London to New York, and starred Nancy Walker.

Now, 70 years later, Fallen Angels returns in its original form as a sophisticated, zany farce set in a posh London apartment. Julia (Kelli O’Hara) and Jane (Rose Byrne) are two wealthy society women who spend a girls’ night swilling champagne and dishing about everything from their husbands to a former lover with whom they both allegedly had an affair. While their husbands are away on a golf trip, the two best friends discuss the impending arrival of former French lover Maurice (Mark Consuelos) and argue over whether to stay in London and face him or leave town entirely.

As they slowly get drunk on champagne, they reflect on whether they are still happy in their marriages. They grow increasingly competitive and revealing as they become more inebriated. Watching Ms. O’Hara and Ms. Byrne’s comic chemistry is completely riveting and consistently hilarious.

Comic masterclass

Ms. O’Hara is best known for playing leading ladies in musical theater and serious dramas. She received a Tony nomination in 2024 for her portrayal of struggling alcoholic Kirsten Arnesen in Days of Wine and Roses. As Julia, Ms. O’Hara plays a more lovable drunk who may remind some of Edina Monsoon in the 1990s BBC Brit-com “Absolutely Fabulous.” She delivers Edina-style physical pratfalls, juggling cigarettes and champagne, pacing nervously, and falling into furniture.

Ms. Byrne received an Oscar nomination this year for playing Linda in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, a disturbing drama about a psychotherapist unable to cope with caring for a daughter with a severe pediatric feeding disorder. She is also renowned for her work in the blockbuster comedies Bridesmaids, Neighbors, and Spy. As Jane, Ms. Byrne is more impulsive than her friend. She staggers and flings herself across the room with a mix of excitement and hysteria. Every emotion manifests physically as she drinks, like a more refined version of Patsy Stone in “Absolutely Fabulous.” Ms. Byrne brings a sense of elegance and cosmopolitan wit to the character of Jane. Both Ms. Byrne and Ms. O’Hara have a harmonic rapport onstage. They truly seem like two friends having a blast together.

Fallen Angels is a classic comedy by Noël Coward, steeped in posh, Art Deco elegance. Nearly a century later, it still sparkles, thanks largely to the electrifying performances of Kelli O’Hara and Rose Byrne. Both actresses lean fully into Coward’s champagne-soaked farce, playing society women who go off the rails into giddy, uninhibited chaos. Ms. O’Hara reveals a dazzling comic edge as Julia, tossing off physical gags with precision while steadily descending into deliciously sloppy drunkenness. Ms. Byrne matches her beat for beat, and together they create a whirlwind of impeccable timing and gleeful excess.

Coward’s world

Noël Coward’s world is one of polished surfaces and carefully curated appearances, where even a casual remark carries weight. He peppers the dialogue with references to London neighborhoods and fashionable destinations, using geography as a sly marker of class and taste. A passing mention of a hotel in Bayswater signals status, aspiration, and the subtle hierarchies that define these characters’ lives. The joke lands differently depending on what you know, but it always lands.

Julia and Jane aren’t the only ones getting laughs in this evening of excess. Tracee Chimo plays the lovable maid Saunders, often serving as a deadpan counterpoint to their antics. Saunders loves to interrupt the ladies with long-winded, often irrelevant anecdotes. She also boasts about how knowledgeable and worldly she is, citing her work with the Red Cross, the Foreign Legion, concert pianists, and countless aristocrats.

Saunders also hilariously condones the duo’s drinking. “Several drinks never do any harm,” she quips. “It is only the first which is dangerous, after that the damage is done.”

Later, when Jane mentions a hotel in Bayswater, it’s not simply a generic line. Mr. Coward plays the same game “Absolutely Fabulous” perfected decades later, using London neighborhoods like Shepherd’s Bush and Holland Park as a wink to those in the know and a subtle dig at social climbing for everyone else.

When the men arrive

Julia and Jane’s husbands Fred (Aasif Mandvi) and Willy (Christopher Fitzgerald) soon come home and instantly know things aren’t normal. The apartment is a mess, and both women try far too hard to appear sober, insisting that everything is fine and nothing out of the ordinary transpired.

Maurice soon arrives and chaos ensues. He is now much older and less handsome than the women remember. (Mark Consuelos, of course, is still very dashing and attractive in real life and he’s perfect as Maurice.) Julia and Jane realize they have risked their marriages for nothing.

Both husbands grow suspicious as they try to figure out what really happened, while the wives attempt to do damage control.

Direction & design

Scott Ellis directs this gifted ensemble with skillful precision, allowing each actor to shine. The set design by David Rockwell is gorgeous, and Jeff Mahshie’s period costumes are stunning, particularly those for the leading ladies. Noël Coward’s comedies are best known for sending up the shortcomings of the British upper classes with razor-sharp dialogue. One could argue that Mr. Coward is not known for plays that are slapstick-driven vehicles. However, in Fallen Angels, the physical chaos really is the story. Watching the two women come unglued before pulling themselves together is what makes the show so much fun.

Aasif Mandvi, Christopher Fitzgerald, and Mark Consuelos provide strong comic support in less showy roles. The three men help give the farce just enough structure as everything spirals delightfully out of control. Fallen Angels is an effervescent, bubbly comedy and one of the best revivals of a Noël Coward play in many years.

Star power, dynamic performances and dark humor are the main reasons to see this winning Broadway revival of Art. The show won the Tony Award for Best Play back in 1998. Is a 27-year-old show featuring an overpriced painting still relevant? Of course. And with a stellar cast including Neil Patrick Harris, James Corden and Bobby Cannavale, the classic Yazmina Reza play is one of the hottest tickets in town.

Pricey painting

Successful dermatologist Serge (Mr. Harris) spends 200,000 francs on an all-white painting by a famous artist that purportedly has several white lines somewhere in the middle. When he invites his two best friends over to show it off, they are not amused.

Marc (Mr. Cannavale) is outraged when he sees the painting and hears how much Serge spent. He crudely dismisses the artwork as a “white piece of s**t” and accuses Serge of becoming pretentious.

The high-strung Yvan (Mr. Corden) at first tries to be neutral. He’s all worked up about his upcoming wedding and attempts to diffused the tension between the Marc and Serge to no avail.

Subtext more relevant in 2025

The title and setup of Art suggests the play is simply about the subjective nature of what is or is not considered “art.” However, the subtext of playwright Yasmina Reza’s story is far more relevant nearly 30 years later: The precarious and fragile nature of longtime friendships, particularly among men.

Marc is horrified that Serge would spend so much money on such a gimmicky painting. He is so contemptuous toward Serge that it puts their 25-year friendship in jeopardy.

Yvan tries in vain to make peace between the two old pals but he ends up simply annoying them instead of improving matters.

The one-act play starts out as an argument about art but quickly becomes a nasty emotional meltdown for all three friends. They wonder if they can all remain friends after such a vitriolic evening.

Great direction & performances

Director Scott Ellis extracts fine performances from the cast.

Neil Patrick Harris is magnificent as Serge, the wealthy doctor who finds it odd that anyone wouldn’t think the painting he bought was great art.

Bobby Cannavale is superb as the angry, argumentative aeronautical engineer Marc.

One of the nicest surprises is just how good James Corden is as the insecure Yvan. Mr. Corden often steals the show with his many neurotic outbursts and temper tantrums. He’s a bit too slapstick at times, but the audience seemed to enjoy his over-the-top antics at the performance this reviewer attended.

Art, like art itself, won’t please everyone but this revival is a lot of fun regardless. There is no question as to why it’s a must-see this fall.

Gilbert and Sullivan purists might be puzzled by Pirates! The Penzance Musical, the new, hysterically over-the-top Broadway reboot of The Pirates of Penzance. Regardless, audiences looking for sheer escapism will love it. This updated and modernized version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta just received a Tony nomination for Best Musical Revival. This gleeful iteration is quite different from the first production in New York City in 1879.

The original show was set on the craggy coast of Victorian-era Cornwall, England. In this revival, however, Pirates! takes place in 1880 New Orleans in the French Quarter. The revamped book contains a few additions and changes to the story. Nonetheless, Gilbert and Sullivan’s basic plot remains intact.

Motley crew of characters

The story focuses on naïve young Frederic (Nicholas Barasch). He is about to turn 21 (or is he?) and erroneously becomes an apprentice to a group of motley pirates. This is due to the mistake made by the engagingly eccentric woman who raised him, nurse Ruth (Jinkx Monsoon). In addition, Frederic was born on February 29^th during a leap year so no one can figure out exactly how old he actually is or how many birthdays he’s actually had.

He starts working as an assistant to the pirate, led by the dashing Pirate King (Ramin Karimloo), an alleged orphaned nobleman-turned-pirate who appears intimidating but is a softie in reality.

Major General-Stanley (David Hyde Pierce) is a lovably bumbling military man with a bevy of beautiful daughters. Frederic is immediately lovestruck by Mabel Stanley (Samantha Williams), one of Major General’s daughters.

Twisty plot & many production numbers

Not being that familiar with Gilbert and Sullivan’s body of work, I will not nitpick about whether or not Rupert Holmes’ modern adaptation is true to the original Pirates of Penzance. It doesn’t matter that the story is now set in the Big Easy because New Orleans is a perfect setting for shameless silliness and the lively score, given an all-American flavor with jazz rhythms thanks to music supervisor Joseph Joubert. The entire cast seems to be having a blast onstage, sporting Linda Cho’s elaborate period costumes and performing choreographer Warren Carlyle’s high-spirited dance moves.

Top-notch performances

The vibe of Pirates! is manic and madcap, but the show is first and foremost an operetta/musical. For Gilbert and Sullivan aficionados, the songs are crucial, and David Hyde Pierce does an excellent job with the most recognizable number, the tongue-twisting classic “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General.” Mr. Hyde Pierce is best known for playing fussy snob Dr. Niles Crane on the popular TV sitcom “Frasier,” but he’s been in countless Broadway musicals and dramas and he certainly approaches the quirky Major-General with the right mix of wit and wackiness.

Mr. Hyde Pierce also takes on the dual role of William S. Gilbert while Preston Truman Boyd doubles as both Arthur Sullivan and the Sergeant of Police. Mr., Truman Boyd and Mr. Hyde Pierce both give a brief introduction at the beginning of the show as Gilbert and Sullivan, respectively.

The always brilliant Ramin Karimloo, also a Broadway veteran, is sublime as the Pirate King. He’s handsome, winsome, and agile, with a natural gift for all the physical comedy involved with the role. Of course, he has a dynamic tenor voice and is a huge crowd-pleaser when singing “I Am the Pirate King” in the first act.

Nonstop energy

Jinkx Monsoon, a two-time “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winner, broke box-office records two years ago when she made her Broadway debut in Chicago. As Ruth, Ms. Monsoon hams it up and is as camp as Christmas, but when she sings, one immediately knows why she has so many fans. She has an amazing voice, especially during her solo number, “Alone, and Yet Alive (The Mikado)” in the second act. She consistently captivates the audience with her nonstop radiant energy. When she sings with cast members, the chemistry she has with the others is incredibly palpable.

Nicholas Barasch is perfectly cast as Frederic, the overzealous youngster and pirate apprentice. With his red hair, squeaky-clean looks, and a lush tenor voice, Mr. Barasch delivers a rock-steady performance and shows amazing physical agility with all the frenzied scenes in the show. His love interest, Mabel, is portrayed by the lovely Samantha Williams. Ms. Williams has a gorgeous soprano voice and a natural rapport with Mr. Barasch.

Admirable direction

Overall, Scott Ellis does an admirable job directing everyone and keeps things light and full of vitality while managing to rein in the cast when needed despite all the hubbub onstage. Pirates! The Penzance Musical is not a definitive new interpretation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s 19^th century saga. However, it’s still a lot of fun for anyone looking for an evening of light entertainment.

To date, John Patrick Shanley’s 2005 Pulitzer Prize Award-winning play Doubt: A Parable is still one of the finest and most concise dramas ever written. At 90 minutes, it gives us an account of a nun, a priest and an accusation—and it is riveting.

Set in 1964 at St. Nicholas, a Catholic church and school in the Bronx, NY, it starts with Father Brendan Flynn (Liev Schreiber) giving us a sermon about a shipwrecked sailor lost at sea for days, having doubts in the direction where he is drifting. Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Amy Ryan) has doubts about anything decent in life, especially Father Flynn’s benevolence. Sister James (Zoe Kazan) not only is the assistant to Sister Aloysius but also plays the eyes and ears—and is in doubt about everything she enjoys in life being sucked out of her by the demanding Sister Aloysius. The last character is Mrs. Malloy (Quincy Tyler Bernsteine), the mother of the only Black boy at St. Nicholas who is befriended by Father Flynn.

In its original production, Doubt was brilliantly staged by Doug Hughes and performed in the highest caliber by Cherry Jones as Sister Aloysius and Bryan F. O’Byrne as Father Flynn. That production had shadings that kept you shifting allegiances. With the exception of Mr. Schreiber, this is an uneven production.

Actors are supposed to bring in their own interpretations to any role and should never try to replicate anyone else’s performance. However, the actor also has to bring shadings to extreme characters especially when they are hell bent on destruction. Amy Ryan, a very capable actress, was a last-minute replacement for Tyne Daly. She is diminutive in stature as compared to the imposing, larger-than-life Mr. Schreiber. Her portrayal of Sister Aloysius is evil incarnate. There is no wiggle room in her performance to give her some space to make her more objective or try to see her viewpoint of what she perceives to be the duty of a headstrong principal of the school. She just sucks out any joy from any life force.

This is where Mr. Schreiber’s charm, charisma and stage presence comes in and brings much needed oxygen back to the stage. Whether there is any proof that he has any guilt on the 12-year-old Black boy by supplying him with altar wine or doing anything inappropriate is unevenly balanced because of the nature of the two antagonists.

Zoe Kazan gives a touching, tortured, conflicted performance as young Sister James who has been so burned by the elder sister. Quincy Tyler Bernstine has a beautiful turn as the mother of the boy who just wants her son to pass the semester so he can go to a good school. Her scene with Sister Aloysius is genuinely touching and she wants nothing to do with her personal vendetta scheming.

In the end it falls on Scott Ellis’ unbalanced direction which has Ms. Ryan floundering when she cries; she has doubts about everything. You feel nothing for her because she instigated the events not from any facts but pure evil, so there is no shifting of allegiance or compassion from one character to the other.

Take Me Out is a show that is enjoyable while watching, but mind-blowing long after leaving the theater and pondering the different subject matters it tackles. I admired the show in 2002 more as a voyeur and missed out on the multiple layers upon which it is built. The central subject matter is the coming out of a beloved baseball player, who is at the top of his game, to the media, unbeknownst to his fellow teammates and without any cause or a personal relationship. Although it might have seemed a breakthrough for a major league athlete to come out as gay in 2002, just think where we are in 2022 and the alarming “Don’t Say Gay” Florida law that was just signed, banning the word “gay,” and other states trying to undo same-sex marriages. It is mind-numbing to see how far we are regressing, which in turn makes Take Me Out more progressive and relevant today.

The catalyst, Darren Lemming (Jesse Williams), a biracial center fielder for the fictional Major League team the Empires, beloved by the public as well as himself, has just announced he is gay for no apparent reason other than to free himself of the secret he’s carried on a daily basis. Now that his sexual orientation is in the open, he must navigate through life with the slings and arrows that are hurled upon him. Everything now comes under scrutiny—from an ordinary shower after a game to dealing with his teammates on a daily basis. He has the support of his teammate and friend Kippy Sunderstrom (Patrick J. Adams), who is also the narrator of the play. However, his best friend Davey Battle (Brandon J. Dirden) who plays on an opposing team, The Larks, is a holy man and revolted by what he considers Lemming’s “deviation” and “depravity.” This is the proverbial line in the sand that has been crossed.

Later, Darren Lemming also acquires a new accountant, Mason Marzac (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). The last one we are to believe has retired. Marzac knows nothing about baseball, but is enthralled that Darren has come out and has new interest in the game. Marzac has learned “that baseball is absolute. It works better than democracy. It has a definite winner and a loser.” Here is another layer for us to peel: in a democracy who wins an election and who loses?

Due to Lemming being in a slump and losses piling up, a dimwitted, racist, homophobic relief pitcher, Shane Mungitt (Michael Oberholtzer), is brought in from the minor leagues. He happens to be an orphan due to his father killing his mother and then killing himself, and is either from Arkansas or Tennessee. Now that the team begins winning, Mungitt is wanted for a press interview where he expresses his displeasure with “colored” people and having to shower with a “fa**ot.” This places Mungitt on suspension.

Due to the suspension, the team goes into a slump again. An apology letter is written and released to the public. Public sentiment wants Mungitt back, against Lemming’s feelings. With Mungitt back, this creates new revelations and consequences that will affect the lives of many. Please unravel the revelations and consequences for yourself, it will be more fulfilling. So many things come into question here, and I’m sure each viewer will have their own interpretation

Although this looks like an ensemble piece, there are four standout remarkable performances; Jesse Williams is an Adonis with a command of the stage that is riveting. His every stance, move and interaction is poetry in motion. Patrick J. Adams as friend and narrator anchors the play in his sincerity. Michael Oberholtzer as the outsider can he heartbreaking once you realize he will always be a failure in life and will always get himself in trouble.

The joker in the deck is Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Marzac, a role that won Denis O’Hare a much-deserved Tony Award in a supporting role. Where Mr. O’Hare was an introverted, nebbish “Mr. Cellophane” who blossomed while loving baseball, Mr. Ferguson is never a milquetoast but a lonely, self-deprecating accountant who falls in love with baseball once he meets Darren Lemming. As his friendship with Darren evolves, so does his flamboyance, giving the show its much needed levity.

My sincere hope is that Take Me Out will be extended beyond May 29th. With so many tourists coming to New York this spring and summer, this would be the one solid play I would recommend people to see. Its poignancy is harder hitting today than it was in 2002.

Based on the brilliant 1982 movie starring Dustin Hoffman, I have to say Tootsie is one of the better adaptations of movies in recent memory. Credit must be given to Robert Horn for an intelligent, bright and imaginative book. It is fresh and to its credit veers slightly from the movie to enable it to have a different slant.

Michael Dorsey (Santino Fontana) can’t land an acting job because of his exacting and infuriating difficulty of doing a part without having to question the parts motivation. He gets fired from every audition. His former girlfriend, Sandy (Sarah Stiles) comes over one night with a script entitled Juliet’s Nurse. Michael is supposed to help her get a better understanding of the part. It is a musical based on Romeo and Juliet; this takes place after Romeo dies but, in this version, Juliet is still alive and the nurse helps her recover. Michael decides to audition for the part of the nurse, and enters as Dorothy Michaels. Of course the show is awful, but Dorothy not only lands the part of the nurse but, with sheer determination, steers the show to a resounding success.

Michael is so desperate to land an acting job that he never considers any of the complications that will arise. For one thing, he falls in love with Julie Nichols, the young lady who plays Juliet (Lilli Cooper). Further complications arise when Romeo’s brother, Chris (John Behlmann) falls madly in love with the nurse/Dorothy Michaels. Dorothy turns a flop to a huge success and has to sign a two-year contract and has to continue being a woman. Michael gets the part and the stardom that he always wanted, but he also comes to a breaking point with all the conflicts he created.

What Mr. Horn has cleverly done is taken the TV setting out, in which Michael auditions for a part in a soap opera; now Michael auditions for a Broadway show which makes it more relatable to the audience who are seeing a Broadway musical. The rest stays true to form, more or less. The book is abetted by a bouncy score from David Yazbek. Last year, Mr. Yazbek won a Tony for the score of The Band’s Visit. While that show’s score was rich and haunting, this is upbeat standard Broadway fare.

The cast, although not dynamic, is effective. Santino Fontana as Michael/Dorothy doesn’t have the luxury to develop these two characters the way Dustin Hoffman did in the movie. In the theater it becomes more of a quick-change artist rather than morphing from one character to the other. Since the audience is already in on the joke, his transitioning becomes easier and less demanding.

Lilli Cooper is charming as Julie Nichols but lacks the vulnerability of the character that draws her to Dorothy/Michael. She is too independent to be taken in. Sarah Stiles, as the neurotic Sandy in desperate need of a part and validation, comes across a tad too shrill in the beginning but is quite effective in the end. John Behlmann as Dorothy’s ardent suitor is perfect as the narcissistic brain-dead actor. Julie Halston as the show’s producer is a delight.

Credit has to be given to director Scott Ellis, as this is his second show this season, the first being the brilliant revival of Kiss Me, Kate currently at Studio 54. The man has taste and knows how to keep things moving at a quick pace. He has taken a familiar story and presented it in new terms as a musical that is worth visiting and enjoying.

In last year’s revival of My Fair Lady at the Vivian Beaumont, the balance of power shifted from Henry Higgins to Eliza Doolittle. This year Roundabout Theatre Company has chosen to do the same sort of gender-power transference with Kiss Me, Kate, in which Lilli Vanessi/Katherine (Kelli O’Hara) trounces Fred Graham/Petruchio (Will Chase) at every turn and in every scene. Having Ms. O’Hara in the part opposite Will Chase, it becomes an absolute knockout.

Cole Porter wrote one of the most glorious scores of all time for a Broadway musical and the songs are as vibrant as ever. The book by the Spewacks hasn’t weathered as well. Act I sets the story in motion, and for all the wonderful songs in Act II, they do not advance the story line much further; they act more as fillers, which was the case in a lot of musicals at the time.

Set in a Baltimore theater, the show starts with the brilliant “Another Op’nin, Another Show,” which sets the tone and mood of what is about to unfold. Lilli Vanessi has returned to the theater one last time to make her farewell performance in Taming of the Shrew, written, produced and directed by her ex-husband Fred Graham. They were married, very much in love but are currently divorced. The complications begin when Fred has cast his latest flirtation, Lois Lane/Bianca (Christine Cornish Smith) and her one true love Bill Calhoun/Lucentio (Corbin Bleu) to also be in Taming of the Shrew. Trouble ensues when Lili finds about Fred’s extracurricular activity involving Lois.

Due to the shift in power, it isn’t so much as taming of the shrew as getting even with your ex-husband. Kelli O’Hara as the shrew, Katherine, is an absolute revelation. She was a sensation in South Pacific, The Pajama Game and her Tony Award-winning role of Anna in The King and I. Here she has elevated her rank to a prima donna diva. Her voice is stunning and her acting is sublime. Will Chase does a valiant Fred/Petruchio, but the deck is stacked against him. Corbin Bleu as the hoofer Bill Calhoun is sensational. However, the highlight of the night is the opening number in Act II “Too Darn Hot,” set on the rooftop of the theater during their intermission where the dancers come up to cool off but instead end up blowing the roof off the theater.

The other thing to remember is when you see a show being directed by Scott Ellis, you know you are in for a treat. He never disappoints and he always has new tricks up his sleeve. He is rhythmically complemented by the wonderful choreographer, Warren Carlyle, and each of his numbers are absolute eye-poppers.

An exquisite, delicious bon-bon of a musical.

In October of 1963 when She Loves Me opened, it hardly made a ripple and barely lasted nine months. That was still the era of the super spectacular musicals. Two dynamic divas were waiting in the wings. Carol Channing opened in January 1964 in Hello, Dolly! and Barbra Streisand torpedoed in March as Funny Girl. What chance did poor David have against two Goliaths?

Thanks to the impeccable taste of the Roundabout Theatre and Scott Ellis, who manage to resurrect these lost gems (last year the glorious revival of On the Twentieth Century), they have brought to life She Loves Me for the second time. The first was in 1993, and the current incarnation is even more delectable.

Set in the summer of 1934 Budapest in and around Maraczek’s Parfumerie, David Rockwell’s gorgeous sets transport the viewer to another world where life was gentler and shopping was an actual experience; where people waited on you and said, “Thank you, please come again.” On this particular day in this lovely store, there is a store manager, Georg Nowack (Zachary Levi) and a young lady, Amalia Balash (Laura Benanti) who is applying for a position as a salesgirl. Needless to say, there is an instant dislike and hostility in their relationship. As chance would have it and unbeknownst to either one, both have pen pals named “Dear Friend.” If this plot sounds familiar, it is. It was first done as a movie in 1940 by the name of The Shop Around the Corner and remade in 1998 as You’ve Got Mail, starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

In this store there are a delightful array of characters: the mantrap, Ilona Ritter (Jane Krakowski), her on again/off again philandering boyfriend, Steven Kodaly (Gavin Creel); the store owner, Mr. Maraczek (Byron Jennings), fellow clerk, Ladislav Sipos (Michael McGrath); and the delivery boy, Arpad Laszlo (Nicholas Barasch). I mention all these characters because they are integral to the story. Back then, they actually wrote songs for all the supporting players and the entire cast have so many moments in which they can shine.

Scott Ellis has polished this gem into a brilliant diamond and set it with an incredible cast. Laura Benanti as Amalia is enchanting. Her soprano voice is reminiscent of Barbara Cook’s (who originated the role of Amalia) and Ms. Benanti’s rendition of “Ice Cream” brings back memories of the great Ms. Cook. Zachary Levi proves he is a masterful musical leading man. He doesn’t rely on just his good looks; he actually is a singing actor.

It’s so great to have Jane Krakowski back on Broadway. She has been in TV land way too long. She is in great voice, with legs to die for and you’ll see why, and gives a much-needed sexiness to Ilona that no other actress has given her. In contrast to Ilona, Kodaly has to be smarmy and debonair, but Gavin Creel plays him slick and lackluster. I’ll insert a factoid here: the only Tony Award Hello, Dolly! lost in 1964 was for best musical supporting actor to Jack Cassidy as Kodaly. No one could do sleazy, smarmy and debonair like the late Mr. Cassidy could and still be loveable. Michael McGrath and Byron Jennings are two Broadway veterans that add humor and class to any show they are in. Nicholas Barasch as Arpad is just bursting with glee.

Other than the title song “She Loves Me” and “Ice Cream,” none of the other songs in this show ever caught on. There are a lot of charming songs for the individual characters, thus they get diluted. However, it is still a delightful score. You would never have known back in 1963 when you were leaving the Eugene O’Neill Theatre after a performance of She Loves Me that the very next year, 1964, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick would introduce the world to not only one of the greatest scores, but to one of the greatest musicals of all time, Fiddler on the Roof. Both shows deal with the foibles, loves and humanity of its people; She Loves Me on a small scale and Fiddler on a universal scale.

Of the four highly anticipated, star-powered plays that arrived this year and that theatergoers are paying top dollar for, the most satisfying and rewarding would be The Elephant Man. For starters, it’s a fascinating and well-written play. Having Bradley Cooper head the cast is an added bonus, and if anyone was wondering whether Mr. Cooper is a movie star in a Broadway play or an actor performing the part, rest assured he is the latter.

Mr. Cooper is a movie star, hence the buzz around this show. He is not only a recent two-time Oscar nominee, but he is also a damn good actor. To say he was the best thing in his 2006 Broadway debut in Three Days of Rain would not be a real compliment. It was a mediocre play at best that starred Julia Roberts and was the hot ticket of that year. This time around he is the star attraction and it gives the show the opportunity to be seen again.

Set in Victorian-era London, Dr. Frederick Treves (Alessandro Nivola) discovers John Merrick, the “Elephant Man” (Mr. Cooper) on display in a freak show. Treves brings Merrick to the hospital where he works to examine him and the extreme deformity of his body. There is no prosthetic makeup used to indicate any of the deformities. As Treves uses slides to indicate Merrick’s deformities, the actors (and a formidable array of them, starting with the original Philip Anglim, David Bowie, Bruce Davison, Mark Hamill, Billy Crudup up to Bradley Cooper), most of them, and especially Mr. Cooper (being extremely good-looking), portray Merrick’s deformity through physicality and Dr. Treves’ description through the slides, letting the audience imagine what Merrick looks like as the Elephant Man.

The next person who is introduced to Merrick is the actress, Mrs. Kendal (Patricia Clarkson), who at first is appalled by his appearance and then overwhelmed by his intelligence, shows him compassion and promises to bring her friends to visit Merrick for he so likes to chat with company. As Merrick’s fame grows, Treves falls into deeper despair knowing that Merrick will not have a long time to live. The psychological aspects of the show I will leave out, for that is the part that makes the show seem dated.

Mr. Cooper, being the best looking and sexiest Elephant Man yet, has the harder task than his predecessors in this role of convincing us of his deformities. Despite his great looks, we manage to see the gentleness, innocence, and also misery that has befallen this man. Mr. Cooper does it in a quite unobtrusive manner. He plays him as an ensemble character rather than a grandstanding movie star. He brings a serene calmness to Merrick.

Alessandro Nivola has the thankless role of Dr. Treves, the healer. He was so bombastic and passionate in The Winslow Boy at the Roundabout a few years ago, but here he is a total one note of gloom and despair. On the other hand, Ms. Clarkson is stalwart yet compassionate, intelligent and charming. The rest of the cast meander in and out.

Since 1979, when it first opened on Broadway, The Elephant Man seems dated a bit due to the psychological aspect of its narrative and lacks the gut- wrenching wallop of the finale, although its themes of science vs. religion are still topical. Overall, it is still a worthwhile drama to be immersed in, and Bradley Cooper makes it all the more worthwhile.

Scott Ellis lends a good hand in directing his cast, but good God, couldn’t he have created a more imaginative curtain call? Couldn’t he at least have given his three leads separate entrances? After all, you have Bradley Cooper in the cast; let him take an extra bow as that’s what the audience is waiting for.
