C’est si bon! All aboard for the Broadway transfer of the Off-Broadway splash-hit musical sensation Titanique. Like the equally outrageous Oh, Mary!, it arrives with a devoted fan base and is poised to win over a new crowd on the Broadway stage.

Marla Mindelle returns as French-Canadian pop superstar Céline Dion. She serves as emcee, narrator, and guide through this satirical retelling of both the Titanic tragedy and the mega-hit, Oscar-winning 1997 film. For its Broadway run, the show is splashier and glitzier. It now features major stars, including Jim Parsons as Ruth DeWitt Bukater and R&B legend Deborah Cox as Molly Brown.

Story & parody

Titanique is a double spoof of both the James Cameron film and Céline Dion. Ms. Dion, of course, never appeared in the movie, but she famously sang the theme “My Heart Will Go On.” However, in her version, she is on the ship. She also plays a major role in the love story of Jack (Constantine Rousouli) and Rose (Melissa Barrera).

All the major plot elements of the 1997 film are here. These include Jack and Rose, as well as her wealthy fiancé Cal (John Riddle). Familiar figures also appear, including Rose’s overbearing mother, the “unsinkable” Molly Brown, and the ship’s crew. Each character is reimagined with exaggerated flair. As a result, Titanique gleefully satirizes the original story into a campy, music-filled spectacle driven by Ms. Dion’s offbeat narration.

The show is a complete parody. It mixes the serious emotional stakes of the 1997 film with zany comedy and hammy theatrics. In turn, the wacky narrative transforms Titanique into an atypical jukebox musical. Céline Dion’s hit songs are cleverly repurposed to fit the absurd retelling.

As the iceberg approaches, Titanique becomes both a loving homage and a nonstop send-up. The show also pokes fun at some of the film’s more unexpected elements. For example, Frankie Grande doubles as both Victor Garber and Luigi, leaning fully into the absurdity. Meanwhile, Layton Williams steals scenes in a dual turn as a seaman and the Iceberg, reimagined as a Tina Turner–inspired drag persona.

On deck: The cast

Marla Mindelle is brilliant, commanding the stage as global pop superstar and Québécois icon Céline Dion with great comic timing and powerhouse vocals. Her over-the-top portrayal borders on caricature, but never feels mean-spirited. Instead, she anchors the show’s chaos with confidence. She guides the audience through the many outrageous twists while never missing a punchline.

Constantine Rousouli brings all the requisite charm to Jack. He highlights the character’s earnestness while embracing the show’s irreverent tone. Melissa Barrera’s Rose stands out, particularly for her vocals. When she teams up with Deborah Cox for the duet “Tell Him,” the two achieve rapturous harmony with matching vibratos. The number becomes even stronger when Ms. Mindelle joins in.

Deborah Cox makes a striking departure from her past glamorous Broadway roles. Here, she plays Molly Brown in the spirit of Kathy Bates, as a boisterous and outspoken woman who cuts through first-class pretensions. Known for both her R&B club hits and Broadway roles in Aida, Jekyll & Hyde, and The Wiz, she delivers a rousing rendition of “All By Myself.”

John Riddle plays Cal as a preening, entitled cad. He heightens the character’s arrogance for comic effect without losing the menace.

Jim Parsons chews up the scenery with comic aplomb as Rose’s overbearing mother, Ruth. Frankie Grande is delightfully absurd in his dual roles as Victor Garber and Luigi.

One of the show’s highlights is Layton Williams as the Iceberg. He delivers a high-energy, show-stopping rendition of “River Deep, Mountain High” that brings down the house.

High camp, lowbrow laughs

At times, the humor is unapologetically raunchy. For instance, a duet between Rose and Molly Brown devolves into a barrage of visual innuendos involving a very suggestive plastic eggplant. This moment reflects the show’s naughty, sometimes lowbrow approach. Along with its LGBTQ-inflected jokes, it pushes the material into PG territory. Even so, Titanique remains suitable for families with older children. At the performance this reviewer attended, several families were in the audience, and the jokes landed with consistent laughter. This sensibility will feel familiar to audiences accustomed to contemporary pop culture and television.

Sailing off in style

Titanique is not only a clever, intelligent parody but also an unabashedly joyful, crowd-pleasing spectacle. It sails along on humor, heart, and vocal fireworks. The show knows exactly what it is and leans into the absurdity with confidence. As a result, it delivers big laughs, powerhouse vocals, and a thoroughly entertaining night at the theater. Director Tye Blue, who co-authored the book with Marla Mindelle and Constantine Rousouli, steers the production with a sure hand. He keeps the laughs coming while embracing the show’s shameless sense of excess.

Like its namesake, Titanique proves unsinkable. If audiences have anything to say about it, this voyage should extend well beyond its initial 16-week run.

OUR TOWN
By Thornton Wilder
Through January 19, 2025
Directed by Kenny Leon
Ethel Barrymore Theatre
242 West 47th Street
www.ourtownbroadway.com

By Scott Harrah

The latest revival of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town bears little resemblance to the classic drama often produced in high schools. Director Kenny Leon has reinvented the renowned story set in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire into a modern-day look at small-town life that reflects 21st century America instead of the early 1900s (the original period for the play).

The show opens with characters onstage singing a hymn that combines Jewish prayers in Hebrew, Muslim prayers in Arabic as well as Christian references. The Stage Manager (Jim Parsons) who narrates the story is still an integral part of the show, but Mr. Leon has added many of the touches that European directors insert into American stage classics to give a “new” twist, such as audience members seated on the stage. Characters in the show enter via running down the aisles through the audience and hop on stage. Although these directorial choices are often effective, they may not please purists of the show.

Our Town has always been produced with minimal sets and props, and in this version the biggest part of the set is a group of lanterns hanging above the stage. Minimalism has always been front and center in the play, and director Kenny Leon has trimmed down everything from the sets to the show’s running length. Our Town is a three-act play, but here it has been condensed into a brief one act that runs about 100 minutes. Since there is no intermission, one of the Stage Manager’s classic lines at the end of Act I—“That’s the end of Act I, folks. You can go and smoke, now. Those that smoke”—has, of course, been cut.

Act I focuses on the daily life of people in Grover’s Corners. The Stage Manager talks about the mundane happenings in the town, from births, marriages, deaths, the paper boy’s route, what people eat for breakfast, folks gossiping, and so on. Our Town centers on two families: First, Mr. Webb (Richard Thomas), the local newspaper editor, and Mrs. Webb (Katie Holmes). They have a young son, Wally (Hagan Oliveras) and daughter, Emily (Zoey Deutch). The second family in focus are the Gibbs, including Dr. Gibbs (Billy Eugene Jones) and Mrs. Gibbs (Michelle Williams). The Gibbs also have a son, George (Ephraim Sykes) and daughter, Rebecca (Safiya Kaijya Harris). Emily and George soon develop a budding romance.

Other townsfolk include the gossipy Mrs. Soames (Julie Halston) and choir director Simon Stimson (Donald Webber, Jr.), a man who is also the notorious local alcoholic. In addition, the dairyman Howie Newsome (John McGinty) is deaf, and characters use sign language to communicate with him.

In Act II, it is three years later, and Emily and George are planning to get married. George decides against leaving town to attend college and decides to stay in Grovers Corners to marry Emily. Despite some hesitation, the two eventually wed.

Act III is set nine years later and takes place in a cemetery outside town. Without giving too much away, many townsfolk have died. One died of pneumonia, one of a burst appendix, and another died by suicide. We meet the local undertaker Joe Stoddard (Anthony Michael Lopez) and Sam Craig (Doron Jepaul), a man who has returned to Grover’s Corners for a cousin’s funeral. We soon realize the deceased cousin is one of the play’s main characters. The Stage Manager talks in detail about death and the probability of an afterlife, but without any religious interpretation.

Overall, director Kenny Leon has added many nice touches, such as the smell of bacon wafting out into the audience when Mrs. Webb is cooking breakfast. Mr. Leon gets primarily effective performances from the cast. Mr. Parsons is outstanding as the Stage Manager. Mr. Thomas and Ms. Holmes portray a great married couple as Mr. and Mrs. Webb, and the same holds true for Mr. Jones and Ms. Williams as the Gibbs. Ms. Halston is often hilarious as the town busybody Mrs. Soames. Mr. Sykes is believable and often touching in his role as George Gibbs. Ms. Deutch as Emily is consistently good, but her final “good-bye” speech—one of the play’s most iconic moments—comes off somewhat strained. This is hardly the best Our Town revival, but fortunately the modern touches and tweaks do not diminish the timeless story of community and life’s ups and downs in small-town America.

A stellar cast and outstanding performances make Mother Play: A Play in Five Evictions one of the year’s must-see dramas. Paula Vogel, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright best known for her masterpiece How I Learned to Drive, delves into painful recollections of her own family with shades of Tennessee Williams’ classic memory play The Glass Menagerie.

Like Amanda Wingfield in Glass Menagerie, the narrative centers on a single mother from the South and her unrealistic dreams for her kids. Jessica Lange stars as Phyllis, a strict and demanding mother who wields power over her two teenage children, Martha (Celia Keenan-Bolger) and Carl (Jim Parsons).

The plays opens in 1962 in suburb of Washington, D.C. Phyllis and her kids have just moved into a new apartment. Phyllis is a divorcée with a drinking problem. Son Carl, 14, is starting to realize he’s probably gay. Daughter Martha, 12, is also learning she might be gay too, and her mother makes her read—in a passive-aggressive demand—the lesbian classic novel The Well of Loneliness as a cautionary tale.

Jessica Lange gives one of the best performances of her career as Phyllis, a woman who keeps moving her kids into disheveled apartments infested with roaches and mice. Phyllis is not exactly a likable character. She is shrill, demanding, volatile and homophobic, but Ms. Lange gives depth to this villainess with her seamless delivery of rapid-fire dialogue and manic mannerisms. It’s hard to take our eyes off Ms. Lange whenever she’s on the stage, and that’s because her performance is so heartbreaking and engrossing.

Reportedly based on playwright Paula Vogel’s real life, Mother Play is both a dramatic confessional and a portrait of a woman with unrealistic dreams for both herself and her children. The story unfolds in five different scenes spanning the decades or “evictions” as we see the family descend into more grief and all are on the edge of madness. Each attempt by Phyllis to control her children’s lives fails, and she just becomes more domineering and despicable.

Jim Parsons as Carl and Celia Keenan-Bolger are both exceptional and demonstrate a believable brother-and-sister chemistry that truly makes the show worth seeing. They are forced to mix their mother’s drinks and find her chic outfits while they both put up with her constant criticism and disapproval.

Mother Play, performed in one act, is not an easy drama to watch despite its brevity. Ms. Vogel’s portrait of family discord is brutally real, and while the show is not always perfect, director Tina Landau gets such fine performances from the cast that the flaws don’t matter in the end. Mother Play is a trenchant American tragedy for these troubled times.

THE BOYS IN THE BAND
Written by Mart Crowley
Directed by Joe Mantello

By Scott Harrah

My first encounter with Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band was back in college, decades after it was originally produced in 1968. I read the play one evening in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down because I’d never read anything that had so many gay-male characters, speaking in such crisp, rapid-fire bitchy dialogue. As engrossing as the play was to me in my early 20s, I also found it completely offensive, particularly the lead character Michael, a reprehensible man who is full of self-loathing and makes racist and anti-Semitic comments and jokes to his friends. Seeing the show in its first-ever Broadway revival, with a stellar cast under Joe Mantello’s tight direction, has taken much of the insolent sting out of Mr. Crowley’s classic.

It’s still a flawed play, dated and inherently off-putting by 21st century standards, but if one looks beyond the now “politically incorrect” content, the show remains a curious masterpiece, and was groundbreaking for being the first drama to show a microcosm of the gay-male subculture. Before Boys, gay men were mostly portrayed in films for comic relief as effeminate, stereotypical characters (hairdressers, florists, interior designers, etc.). As a vehicle for Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Robin de Jesus (all openly gay, by the way) and others, this ebullient revival is certainly an event. For millennials and anyone too young to remember the dark days of gay life before and after Stonewall and the horror of the AIDS pandemic, it is an historical reminder of how far gay men have progressed.

The plot revolves around Michael (Jim Parsons), an unemployed writer who somehow can afford a posh, two-level Upper East Side Manhattan apartment (David Zinn’s scenic design is gorgeous, but seems too modern for the 1960s). Michael is a high-strung, well-educated man from the South and was raised in an affluent Catholic family. As the story opens, he’s preparing to host a 32nd birthday party for his friend Harold (Zachary Quinto), a man he derisively refers to as a “pock-marked Jew.” His friend Donald (Matt Bomer), an easygoing “underachiever,” arrives after a canceled session with his therapist and is helping Michael with party preparations. The phone rings and Michael learns his supposedly straight college roommate from Georgetown, Alan (Brian Hutchison), is in tears and desperately needs to see him. Michael hesitantly invites his old friend over.

Guests start arriving. There is Emory (Robin de Jesus), the swishy interior decorator; “Cowboy” (Charlie Carver), a mentally vapid, pretty-boy blond male hustler and Emory’s “birthday present” for Harold; Hank (Tuc Watkins), a schoolteacher in the process of divorcing his wife; Hank’s lover, Larry (Andrew Rannells), a fashion photographer with monogamy issues; and Bernard (Michael Benjamin Washington), a bookstore clerk, the only African-American in the group and the butt of many cruel, unfunny racist jokes and “n” word slurs by Michael.

The play has been referred to as an anachronistic “Auntie Tom” story for gays because it depicts gay men as victims of both society and their own self-abasement. Granted, Boys was written in an era when most gay men had no choice but to stay in the closet, but have supposedly close friends (gay or straight) of any time period ever been so vicious to each other? Then again, the premise of friends being catty to each other is the foundation of all the puerile, sophomoric TV reality shows nowadays, so in that sense The Boys in the Band was decades ahead of its time.

As the drinks flow, the guys’ true feelings come out and one of the narrative highlights is a “truth” game and Michael insists that each guest pick up the telephone and call someone from the past or present to proclaim their love. Painful secrets and pathos are revealed with each telephone call, but discussing them further would spoil much of the story.

Joe Mantello directs the amazing ensemble of actors beautifully, but the biggest disappointment is Jim Parsons as Michael. Mr. Parsons, a TV superstar in his own right as nerdy genius Sheldon Cooper on the megahit series “The Big Bang Theory,” is no stranger to the Broadway stage, appearing in everything from winning revivals of Harvey and The Normal Heart to the lead in An Act of God. Unfortunately, Mr. Parsons is miscast as Michael, because he exudes too much charisma and likability for the despicable character of Michael. Michael is a man who says mean-spirited, repulsive things like “Oh, you really gotta figger, it’s tough to be a n****r, but it’s tougher to be a Jew” and self-deprecating zingers such as “You show me a happy homosexual and I’ll show you a gay corpse.” However, Mr. Parsons is too charming, guileless and—dare I say it?—too much like TV’s Sheldon Cooper when he should simply be vile. As Harold himself says, “Michael doesn’t have charm. He has counter-charm.”

Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington and Tuc Watkins are all outstanding. This production’s biggest standout is Zachary Quinto as Harold. Mr. Quinto, first known for playing Spock in several Star Trek film sequels, is also a Broadway stage veteran, but here he gives one of his most memorable live performances ever. Although Mr. Quinto is perhaps too handsome for the role of Harold, he is nonetheless a revelation of wit and venom in his tinted glasses and outrageous mod 1960s garb, delivering his acerbic lines with zeal. However, in this case, he would have had greater impact on the show had he played the character of Michael. One can imagine how great he might have been in the role. Perhaps he might have evened out this production a bit and given Michael the hateful edge that’s necessary for the part.

Some have said that, without The Boys in the Band, there would never have been Angels in America and the countless gay-themed plays that followed, such as Terrence McNally’s Love! Valour! Compassion! Love it or dismiss it, Mart Crowley’s 50-year-old drama shows the dark, unsettling roots of LGBT life in the 1960s, and there is certainly a lot to ponder with these complicated “boys” back in town on the Broadway stage.

AN ACT OF GOD
Written by David Javerbaum
Directed by Joe Mantello
Through August 2, 2015
Studio 54
254 West 54th Street
(212-239-6200), www.AnActOfGod.com

By David NouNou

What a divine inspiration for God to make an appearance in the 21st century and give us His new version of the Ten Commandments, not in the form of a burning bush, bleeding statue, or some religious relic, but to use the body of Jim Parsons and, of all places, the Sodom and Gomorrah of the 1970s and 1980s, Studio 54. Simply heavenly.

We know that God is omnipotent, omniscient, created the world in six days and can be merciful. We have an inkling that He can be full of wrath, vengeful, jealous, unjust and downright cantankerous. We now know that, on good days, He also has a sense of humor.

Humor is the joy that David Javerbaum (head writer and executive producer of “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart”) has mined in An Act of God, based on the memoir of God. However, the proverbial cup that runneth over is God choosing Jim Parsons to represent Him in the flesh. We all know Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper, the Ph.D., theoretical physicist from TV’s “The Big Bang Theory,” but who knew he may actually be God who wears a flowing white robe, jeans and red sneakers?

If you had the good fortune to see Mr. Parsons in the astounding 2011 revival of The Normal Heart and the 2012 revival of Harvey, you know what a proficient actor he can be on stage. Now in what is an essentially 90-minute monologue, he shows us God’s duality, the good side of Him and the one who is weary of the day-to-day problems of mankind. He is vain and does not concern Himself in sports, so we should stop praying to Him for our favorite team to win or help us with the Tony ballot come this Sunday. Mr. Parsons has been blessed with the power to show us God in all of his moods. To show you what a superb actor Mr. Parsons is, and this is not a spoiler alert, just wait till the 8th Commandment, “To Honor Thy Children” and watch the compassion that runs throughout his whole being.

God also has two delightful assistants, the questioning angel Michael (Christopher Fitzgerald) and the servicing angel Gabriel (Tim Kazurinsky). The set by Scott Pask and lighting by Hugh Vanstone are other worldly and I mean that in the good sense. Just like he did for Bette Midler in I’ll Eat You Last, director Joe Mantello knows how to extract the best from his actors who engage in monologues.

The only thing missing in An Act Of God is the 11th Commandment; “Thou Must Go to Studio 54 and see Jim Parsons.”
