Highest Number of Attendances by International Visitors in History

Record High Number of Admissions by Non-Caucasian Theatregoers

For 3rd Season in a Row, Over 3 Million Admissions by Those Under Age 25

New York, NY – The Broadway League released the 22nd annual demographics report, The Demographics of the Broadway Audience 2018–2019, which provides a comprehensive analysis of the theatregoers who attended Broadway shows in New York City last season. It also compares current Broadway theatregoing habits in New York City to previous seasons and aids in predicting trends for the future.

In the 2018–2019 season attendance reached an all-time record high of 14.8 million admissions. Among these, 2.8 million international visitors attended a Broadway show. This represents the highest number of attendances by tourists from outside the US in history. Along with the overall growth in attendance, the number of admissions by non-Caucasian theatregoers reached a record high of 3.8 million. Additionally, Broadway welcomed 3.4 million admissions by those under age 25, the third season in a row that attendance from younger audiences topped 3 million.

The analysis is based on extensive survey data gleaned from audience questionnaires distributed throughout the 2018–2019 Broadway season in New York City highlighting both audience demographics and their ticket purchasing habits. Each year brings fluctuations to the make-up of audiences due to a variety of reasons such as content, weather, the economy, and changing competition for leisure activities. Therefore, this longitudinal analysis demonstrates wider trends and changes of the audience over multiple seasons.

“This is a thrilling time for Broadway and our audiences. Think about it, this season you could see every kind of Broadway show, from Tina to My Name Is Lucy Barton; West Side Story to The Lehman Trilogy; Phantom to Slave Play,” said Thomas Schumacher, Chairman of the Broadway League. “The breadth of this programming diversity is exactly what we on Broadway are supposed to do: serve the widest possible audience by doing work that appeals to them. Unmistakably, we have further to go but how gratifying that we continue to see younger and more diverse audiences year in and out.”

“It’s so exciting to see younger and more diverse audiences filling our theatres. Broadway Bridges, Kids’ Night on Broadway, and the Jimmys Awards are only a few of the programs that we have developed to encourage young people and diverse audiences to be a part of Broadway, and this latest report shows the impact of these initiatives,” said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League. “Broadway is truly for everyone, and with the wide variety of productions available, it’s no wonder that we’re attracting audiences from everywhere.”

MORE FROM THE 2018 – 2019 REPORT

In the 2018–2019 season, Broadway shows welcomed 14.8 million admissions, an all-time high.

Approximately 35% of those attendances were by people from the New York City metropolitan area.

Sixty-five percent of admissions were made by tourists: 46% from the United States (but outside New York City and its suburbs) and 19% from other countries.

This represents the highest number of attendances by international visitors in history— 2.8 million.

Sixty-eight percent of the audiences were female.

The average age of the Broadway theatregoer was 42.3 years old. This average has hovered between 40 and 45 years old for the past two decades.

Along with the overall growth in attendances, the number of admissions by non-Caucasian theatregoers reached a record high of 3.8 million.

Of theatregoers age 25 or older, 81% had completed college and 41% had earned a graduate degree.

The average annual household income of the Broadway theatregoer was $261,000.

The average number of attendances by the Broadway theatregoer was 4.4 in the past year. The group of devoted fans who attended 15 or more performances comprised only 5% of the audience, but accounted for 28% of all tickets (4.15 million admissions).

Playgoers tended to be more frequent theatregoers than musical attendees. The typical straight-play attendee saw seven shows in the past year; the musical attendee, four.

Respondents reported having paid an average of $145.60 per ticket.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents said they purchased their tickets online.

The average reported date of ticket purchase for a Broadway show was 47 days before the performance, four days earlier than the previous season.

Google was the most common initial source theatregoers named when they were asked where they looked for information about Broadway shows. Ticketmaster and Broadway.com followed Google.

Twenty-two percent said that they relied primarily on word-of-mouth from people they knew.

Most theatregoers attended in pairs or small groups of family or friends.

The vast majority of current theatregoers had some connection to theatregoing as a child.

The Demographics of the Broadway Audience is published annually by The Broadway League, the clearinghouse for information on the business, demographics and economic impact of Broadway theatre throughout North America. The League compiles various statistics and publishes extensive reports on a number of topics.
The Broadway League thanks TDF for its generous support in co-funding this ongoing research project.

# # #

About the Methodology

From June 2018 through May 2019, the League’s Research Department administered surveys at 49 different productions at 98 individual performance times. Shows were selected on a quarterly basis to represent what Broadway was offering that season (i.e., a proportionate number of musicals versus straight plays; revivals versus original works; and new productions versus long-running shows). Questionnaires were distributed at multiple performances per show to account for variances in the weekday, weekend, evening, and matinee audiences. Completed questionnaires were tabulated and weighted based upon the actual paid attendance for each show. In total, 17,400 questionnaires were distributed and 8,972 were returned, representing a 52% rate of return.

THE BGA COLLEGE GREEN CAPTAIN PRIZE FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN GREENER THEATRE

Inaugural prize to be part of annual U.S. Institute of Theater Technology Conference in March 2015

(New York, New York) December 8, 2014 — The Broadway Green Alliance (BGA) has launched a new contest to reward College Green Captains for their efforts to create greener productions on college campuses. Winners will have brought innovative, creative, or widely-applied greening and energy-efficient methods into the design or production of theatre at their campus.

The winner of the BGA College Green Captain prize will receive a pair of tickets to the Broadway or touring production of either Wicked or The Lion King, along with a professional backstage tour of the production, and a meeting with a current Broadway Green Captain, subject to availability. (Past Broadway Green Captains have included: Bryan Cranston, Alan Cumming, Blythe Danner and Audra MacDonald.) The posters of finalists will also be displayed at the BGA booth at the U.S. Institute of Theater Technology Conference in Cincinnati in March.

To apply for the prize, College Green Captains should submit a one-page summary statement explaining their efforts to make greener theatre. They must also submit a pdf of an 18” x 24” cardboard poster that showcases the best elements of their greening program. Additional materials can include a 3-5 minute video or up to 10 pages of written reports or spreadsheets documenting the greening. Photographs with captions explaining the program are encouraged.

Entries are due by March 1, 2015. Entries, including large files, can be sent to green@broadwaygreen.com. Any student or faculty/staff member interested in the contest and looking to make their theatre greener is encouraged to volunteer to be a College Green Captain, and sign up at http://www.broadwaygreen.com/college-green-captains. All prize applicants must be College Green Captains.

The winner will be selected by a panel of judges which includes: Associate Professor of Theatre Technology at Indiana University and co-chair of the BGA Education Committee, Paul Brunner; BGA Co-chair and Executive Vice President of Clark Transfer, Charlie Deull; Assistant Professor of Sustainability and Design for Theatre at York University, Ian Garrett; NRDC Senior Scientist, Allen Hershkowitz, PhD.; and Tony® Award-winning set designer, Donyale Werle (Peter and the Starcatcher; Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson).

The BGA College Green Captain program is modeled after the successful BGA Green Captain program in which a cast or crew member of every Broadway show volunteers to serve as a BGA liaison of the production for all things environmentally friendly. College Green Captains are self-selected members of a college or university theatre department who are committed to greening one or more of the department’s productions. College Green Captains are encouraged to find a faculty or staff Green Captain to oversee greening efforts.

This award aims to recognize and encourage outstanding BGA College Green Captains for their environmentally friendly theatre productions. Some examples of greener practices include energy-efficient lighting, rechargeable batteries, educating the cast and crew about better environmental practices, recycling or composting on the set, and more. More information about the prize can be found at BroadwayGreen.com. Current or prospective College Green Captains can join the conversation on Twitter @CollegeGCs or on Facebook.

THE BROADWAY GREEN ALLIANCE (BGA) educates, motivates and inspires the entire theater community and its patrons to implement environmentally friendlier practices. The BGA, launched in 2008, is an ad hoc committee of The Broadway League and an affiliate program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. The BGA brings together all segments of the theater community, including producers, theaters in New York and around the country, theatrical unions and their members, and related businesses. Working closely with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the BGA identifies and disseminates better practices for theater professionals and reaches out to theater fans throughout the country.
