Two decades after it first appeared on Broadway, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is back. This Off‑Broadway revival feels both nostalgic and fresh. Spelling Bee was originally nominated for six Tony Awards and winner of two, including Best Book of a Musical for Rachel Sheinkin and Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Dan Fogler. The show also helped launch the careers of Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Josh Gad. Now, with an updated script and a marvelous cast, this beloved show proves why it has remained such an enduring hit.

The story of Spelling Bee

At its core, Spelling Bee is a musical comedy about six offbeat middle-school students competing in a regional spelling bee. Set inside a school gymnasium, the competition is a forum for the kids to show off their spelling skills and vent about their personal insecurities, hope and dreams. They share the stage with Vice Principal Douglas Panch (Jason Kravits), the weary “pronouncer” of the competition. Other characters include moderator and former champion Rona Lisa Peretti (Lilli Cooper); and overprotective parents who hover on the sidelines.

The competitors

Meanwhile, the characters and their many quirks quickly overshadow the actual spelling. Each contestant delivers a humorous monologue before attempting a word.

For example, there’s Olive Ostrovsky (Jasmine Amy Rogers), a nervous speller who’s upset because her mother is in India at an ashram, her father is running late to the event and she doesn’t have the $25 entrance fee.

William Barfée (Kevin McHale) is a cocky guy with many physical ailments who uses his “magic foot” technique to help him spell out words.

Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre (Autumn Best) is a spunky speller with a lisp who cannot spell a word without her two fathers standing by her on the podium to encourage her.

The remaining contestants include Chip Tolentino (Phillipe Arroyo), a former champion and Boy Scout facing the awkward (and sometimes funny) realities of puberty; Leaf Coneybear (Justin Cooley), an unfocused speller with ADHD; and Marcy Park (Leana Rae Concepcion), a hyper‑accomplished overachiever who speaks six languages, practices karate, and sleeps just three hours a night.

Adding to the fun, several audience volunteers are selected at random to compete alongside the actors, creating spontaneous moments each night.

Winning ensemble cast

Spelling Bee relies on a cohesive company of the six spelling contestants. All of the six actors form a winning ensemble, thanks to tight direction and choreography by Danny Mefford.

First, Jasmine Amy Rogers is an emotional powerhouse as Olive, the anxious girl who is devastated that her parents are not attending the competition. Her delivery and timing are top notch. Her vocals in the solo numbers “My Friend, the Dictionary” and “The I Love You Song” are heartwarming highlights.

Next, Kevin McHale (of “Glee” fame) is perfect as William, the overzealous nerd. Mr. McHale is superb singing his solo “Magic Foot” and sometimes steals the show with his many outbursts and nervous tics.

Additionally, Justin Cooley’s quirky, trance‑like Leaf is consistently hilarious, while Phillipe Arroyo earns big laughs as Chip in “My Unfortunate Erection (Chip’s Lament).”

In addition, two of the other young actresses in the show are also crowd pleasers. Leana Rae Concepcion is hysterical as Marcy, the annoying overachiever, and she sings “I Speak Six Languages” with conviction. Autumn Best is charming as Logainne, the know-it-all girl with a speech impediment and a problem with low blood sugar.

Among the adults, Lilli Cooper shines as the spunky, high-spirited Rona. Jason Kravits brings charm and perfectly calibrated frustration to Vice Principal Douglas Panch.

A Spelling Bee for the 2020s

Although much of the original 2005 show remains intact, the script includes contemporary updates. For instance, Logainne references “hot” mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani. Also, the epilogue humorously notes her later role in “President AOC’s administration.” Together, these touches keep the show grounded in present-day America without sacrificing its timeless appeal.

Ultimately, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee celebrates underdogs navigating competition, identity, and the pressure to succeed—all themes as resonant now as they were two decades ago. This joyous revival is sure to be a big h‑i‑t.

Tony Award winner Jonathan Groff gives his best performance to date in Just in Time, the new Broadway musical about the iconic Bobby Darin, the velvet-voiced pop singer of the 1950s and 1960s who died at age 37.  Mr. Groff brings the man who sang such classics as “Splish Splash,” “Mack the Knife,” “Dream Lover” and “Beyond the Sea” to vivid life in the best “jukebox musical” since Jersey Boys nearly two decades ago. One doesn’t need to be a Bobby Darin fan to appreciate the nonstop energy that Mr. Groff brings to the role.

Broadway via the Copacabana & Las Vegas

Scenic designer Derek McLane has turned Circle in the Square into a glorious retro nightclub that pays homage to the venerable Copacabana in Manhattan and the glitzy Las Vegas lounge stages of yesteryear. It’s a winning tribute to a bygone era when stylish ladies and gentlemen would gather in cozy, intimate nightclubs to sip cocktails, smoke cigarettes and marvel at the latest pop crooners of the day. Shortly after the show opens, Mr. Groff reminds us that he’s not the real Bobby Darin and we’re actually watching this spectacle “in the basement of Wicked.”

What’s more, the mellifluous orchestrations by music supervisor Andrew Resnick and Michael Thurber bring all the ebullient brass and jazz-hot sounds of a “big band” orchestra to the Broadway stage. This lets audiences immerse themselves in the nostalgic glory of the classic songs being performed.

As an added treat, we see performances by two of Mr. Darin’s real-life romantic partners: The inimitable, golden-throated pop queen Connie Francis (Gracie Lawrence); and “America’s sweetheart,” movie superstar Sandra Dee (Erika Henningsen), who was briefly married to Mr. Darin. Both women, like Bobby Darin himself, lived very public, volatile lives and were scandalous tabloid fodder in their heyday and beyond.

An icon & his lady loves

Bobby Darin (real name Walden Robert Cassotto) had a short but dramatic life. Growing up in East Harlem, New York, he suffered from bouts of rheumatic fever as a child and doctors said he would only live to be 16, but he proved them wrong.

He started out as a songwriter for Ms. Francis. She was already a household name with such hits as “Stupid Cupid” and “Who’s Sorry Now?” Darin immediately took a shine to the star and she was also smitten with him, but her parents did not approve.

Goody-two-shoes matinee idol Sandra Dee also won his heart. After pouring on lots of charm and giving flowers to her demanding, overprotective mother (Valeria Yamin), Mr. Darin got her blessing and was allowed to date Ms. Dee while filming Come September in Portofino, Italy in 1960. She was just 18 and he was 24 at the time. They had a brief, passionate affair and later married. Ms. Dee and Mr. Darin had one child, son Dodd, before divorcing.

Scandalous family secret

Mr. Darin was raised by Polly Walden (Michele Pawk), his nurturing mother. His older sister Nina (Emily Bergl)  looks out for him as if she is his nanny. When Mr. Darin becomes successful, he hires Nina’s husband—his brutish brother-in-law, Charlie Maffia (Joe Barbara)—as his personal valet. All three family members have been keeping a scandalous secret from Bobby all his life and his world is shattered when he learns the truth

Outstanding performances

Director Alex Timbers skillfully directs the gifted cast, all of whom give outstanding performances.

The supporting cast are certainly worth noting. Gracie Lawrence is superb as Connie Francis, singing the nostalgic star’s songs with the right mix of zest and vulnerability. Ms. Lawrence’s take on the Connie Francis standard “Who’s Sorry Now?” is one of the show’s highlights. She also captures the singer’s demure presence and powerhouse presence with aplomb. That’s no easy task considering Ms. Francis was a superstar in the 1950s and 1960s, singing both pop chart-toppers as well as ethnic standards. Songs from her two albums Connie Francis Sings Italian Favorites and Connie Francis Sings Jewish Favorites are still played at many Italian and Jewish weddings today.

Erika Henningsen also gives a knockout portrayal of Sandra Dee, another megastar from the era. Ms. Henningsen brings all the saccharine sweetness and melodrama to the character, and does so with consistent conviction. It’s quite a departure from her most famous Broadway role, originating the lead part of Cady Heron in Mean Girls. 

Michele Pawk as Polly Walden, and Emily Bergl as Nina, both bring plausibility to their respective roles, and each has a unique and crisp voice. Valeria Yamin is magnificent as Sandra Dee’s overbearing mother.

Noteworthy supporting cast

Other noteworthy supporting performances include the always-delightful Cesar Samayoa (How to Dance in Ohio and Come From Away). Mr. Samayoa really nails the part of 1970s music maven Don Kirshner, the man who discovered many pop and rock greats, including Bobby Darin. Gen X audiences will remember his 1970s TV show “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.”  Mr. Samayoa has an amazing voice and does a fine job portraying Mr. Kirshner as well as other small parts in the show. In addition, Joe Barbara is the ultimate New York tough guy as Charlie, Bobby’s personal valet and brother-in-law.

Jonathan Groff’s best role yet

Bobby Darin is the role Jonathan Groff was born to play. He won a Tony Award for Merrily We Roll Along and was nominated for a Tony for his portrayal of Mad King George in Hamilton. However, he is at the top of his game here. Mr. Groff has the charm, acting chops and beautifully textured voice to bring Bobby Darin back to glorious life. He sweats profusely and is a manic, energized force who keeps us riveted and mesmerized from the moment the show starts and he never lets up. Don’t miss Just in Time.

The 1992 film Death Becomes Her, starring Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, was a phenomenal hit comedy, with iconic performances by the two actresses and state-of-the-art special effects. Broadway stage adaptations are always tricky and a gamble. Fortunately, this musical captures all the outrageous fun and special effects that made the movie so memorable. What’s more, at times the Broadway version surpasses the movie’s high-energy level of self-parody, and that’s a plus for anyone who loves exaggerated entertainment for laughter’s sake.

Like the famous film on which it is based, the musical Death Becomes Her revels in all the catty fun one can think of when two women who are best friends and celebrities take rivalry to outrageous lengths. It has all the ingredients for bona fide camp: Bitchy one-liners, the quest for eternal youth, and women fighting over men. Not exactly feminist fare, for sure, but the 1992 movie never tried to be that either. More like Clare Booth Luce’s The Women fused with a horror movie with a subtext about the dangers of extreme plastic surgery gone horribly wrong.

The plot

For those who have never seen the movie, here’s a brief synopsis. Madeline Ashton (Megan Hilty) is an aging Hollywood star who will do anything to restore her once-youthful beauty. Her friend and rival Helen Sharp (Jennifer Simard) is a struggling writer married to plastic surgeon Ernest Menville (Christopher Sieber). Desperate to rejuvenate her looks, Madeline visits the enigmatic Viola Van Horn (Michelle Williams), a woman who sells her a magic potion that will restore beauty and make one forever young. One catch: The potion makes people live forever, and beauty and immortality both have many sobering consequences and side effects.

Madeline and Helen have been “frenemies” for years, with Madeline obsessed with her vanity and Helen thirsty for revenge. When Madeline steals Ernest from Helen, all-out war ensues.

True to the film

The musical adaptation of Death Becomes Her is mostly true to the 1992 film, despite a few minor changes in the script and some character’s names that will only be noticed by those who have seen the movie dozens of times (this reviewer, for example).  Marco Pennette’s book is consistently crisp and full of quick-witted repartee. Thanks to “illusions” by Tim Clothier, a gorgeous set by Derek McLane, fantastic lighting by Justin Townsend, ultra-glamorous costumes by Paul Tazewell and hair and wigs by Charles LaPointe, Broadway’s Death Becomes Her is a nonstop glitz-fest. For years, critics have been complaining that Broadway musicals are too threadbare, utilitarian and not extravagant enough anymore, but this one pulls out all the proverbial stops.

The score

Julia Mattison and Noel Clary’s songs are all whimsical and witty. However, although few are particularly memorable, they certainly are never dull. One of the standouts is “For the Gaze,” Madeline’s gleefully silly production number in act one. The “Gaze” she sings about are actually “gays” and she impersonates everyone from Liza Minnelli to Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria while scantily clad chorus boys dance around her.

Sublime cast

The sublime cast truly makes Death Become Her shine. It is a treat to see the two female leads back on Broadway. Megan Hilty is a true comic delight as Madeline Ashton. With her seamless delivery of snarky wisecracks and her soaring vocals, Ms. Hilty is the perfect Madeline. Equally outstanding is Jennifer Simard, who makes the perfect transition from mousy frump Helen to a buxom sexpot. Ms. Simard has been slowly gathering momentum on Broadway over the years, and her portrayal of Helen Sharp is her best performance ever. Christopher Sieber is also amazing as Ernest Melville, the plastic surgeon who must endure “Mad” and “Hel” for too long.

Supporting cast members are equally extraordinary. Michelle Williams sheds her Destiny’s Child image and portrays the mystical Viola Van Horn with the right mix of mystique and the macabre. Of course, her vocals on such songs as “Don’t Say I Didn’t (Warn You)” are first rate. Josh Lamon gives a fun performance as Stefan, Madeline’s overworked assistant. Taurean Everett is wonderfully menacing as Chagall, Viola’s assistant.

Director and choreographer Christopher Gattelli directs everything fluidly and smoothly, helping make Death Becomes Her one of the year’s best musicals. It’s hilarious from the moment the curtain rises and the madcap insanity never lets up.

Artificial intelligence or “AI” is becoming commonplace in the 21^st century, and it won’t be too long until robots will be everywhere. However, although robots are not human, do they have actual emotions? Can they fall in love? That’s the premise of Will Aronson and Hue Park’s charming, high-tech musical Maybe Happy Ending, set in the near future in Seoul, Korea.

Darren Criss stars as Oliver, a “HelperBot 3” robot. He is “retired” from his work as a robot. Oliver has a dull, routine life and goes each day to get his mail, hoping his owner James will call him back to work.

Soon, it is 12 years later. Oliver meets Claire (Helen J Shen), a “HelperBot 5” who is a younger, later model. She knocks on his door to ask if she can borrow his “charger.” Like a cell phone, these robots must have their batteries recharged or else they will “power down.”

In a fast-moving one hour and 45 minutes, we see Oliver and Claire fall in love and also learn about their own mortality because, like humans, robots don’t live forever. The musical is often touching, especially when Oliver learns the truth about James (Marcus Choi) and has a confrontation with James’ son, Junseo (also played by Mr. Choi).

Brilliant design team

Overall, Maybe Happy Ending is a simplistic musical, with standard songs and music and a gorgeous, futuristic but utilitarian set created by a brilliant team: video design by George Reeve; scenic and additional design by Dane Laffrey; neon lighting by Ben Stanton; and sound by Peter Hylenski. In addition to the songs and set, small items from a firefly in a jar, a record player to a potted plant help propel the story forward.  The firefly represents the short-lived beauty of relationships, while the potted plant named HwaBoon is a metaphor for Oliver’s craving for attention. The record player helps Oliver relive his past, when he often played jazz records for his owner.

First-rate ensemble

Director Michael Arden gets superlative performances from the first-rate ensemble cast. Mr. Criss (American Buffalo, How to Succeed… and TV’s “Glee”) is consistently outstanding. Whether he’s brushing his teeth (and eyebrows) or taking care of his plant, Mr. Criss is a master at physical comedy and is in fine voice. Helen J Shen is a natural as Claire, the quick-witted younger robot, and she has tremendous chemistry with Mr. Criss. Marcus Choi skillfully portrays multiple roles from James and Junseo to numerous other characters. Dez Duron is dynamic as a sharp-dressed mid-century singer. One would never expect a musical about robots to deliver such a heartwarming message about humanity and technology, but that is just one of many nice surprises in Maybe Happy Ending.

Don’t go to Oh, Mary! expecting an historically accurate portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln. Do go if you want to see Broadway’s funniest show in many years. The show recently transferred to the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway after a sold-out run downtown at the Lucille Lortel. Original comedies are almost unheard of on Broadway nowadays, and no one ever thought we would get one that’s consistently hysterical from start to finish.

Cole Escola wrote Oh, Mary! and stars as Mary Todd Lincoln in a show that is like a very raunchy, family-unfriendly extended skit from TV’s “Carol Burnette Show” with shades of humor similar to the absurdist gender-bending genius Charles Busch and his many farcical shows. However, Cole Escola has a unique comic style all their own, from their manic energy to the endless pratfalls and exaggerated facial expressions.

There’s not much a reviewer can tell you about the show without giving away all the crazy comic twists but here’s the basic premise in this totally unauthorized, inaccurate “historical” bio-comedy: Mary Todd Lincoln is an alcoholic diva who will do anything for booze. She tries hiding it and her husband, President Abraham Lincoln (Conrad Ricamora), goes to great lengths to keep her away from the bottle but is always unsuccessful. The president is watching the Civil War wind down and is worried that news of Mary being a boozer will damage his already fragile public image, but he has a scandalous secret of his own: He’s gay and has the hots for his assistant, Kyle (Tony Macht).

Mary is also at odds with her friend and chaperone, Louise (Bianca Leigh). Mary insists she is a cabaret star and her time would be better spent working the cabaret circuit around the country rather than sitting around bored, being First Lady of the United States in the White House.  The humor is tasteless, silly, stupid and completely juvenile, and that’s what makes Oh, Mary! so much fun. From Mary desperately drinking paint thinner when she can’t find her booze to puking in a bucket, Cole Escola’s comedic sensibility is shamelessly lowbrow, in the same way that early John Waters films were vile, gross, inane but also hysterical. Everything is done for cheap laughs here—and it always works.

To humor Mary’s dreams of being in show business, Abe hires a handsome young acting teacher (James Scully) to teach Mary how to act in classic Shakespearean dramas. Mary reacts like a spoiled brat of a child, insisting the Bard is beneath her and she’s much more suited to wearing showgirl costumes in a ridiculous cabaret act.

This reviewer will not give any more of the story away, but of course we all know how the story of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln ends on that fateful night at Ford’s Theater in Washington. Or do we?

Director Sam Pinkerton gets outstanding performances from the entire cast and manages to keep all the insanity together for 80 glorious minutes. Conrad Ricamora as “Mary’s husband” (as he is listed in the Playbill) gives a gleefully goofy portrayal of Abraham Lincoln as a horny closeted gay man, and his performance shows what great range he has as an actor considering that, last year, he played Philippine senator Ninoy Aquino in Here Lies Love on Broadway. Bianca Leigh, Tony Macht and James Scully are all marvelous supporting players. Cole Escola as Mary is simply brilliant, a true master of the absurd. Cole Escola is Broadway’s newest, most original gender-fluid clown, and they have set a new high standard for comedy in the American theater.

2024 is year when most Americans have little to bring us joy and something so absurd and mirthful that it makes us guffaw and howl with delight. Oh, Mary! is a gift to a troubled city and a deeply divided nation in need of genuine laughs.

Hallelujah! I can finally say that an extravagant, splashy, glitzy musical has landed at the Broadway Theatre by the name of The Great Gatsby.  The show surprisingly sticks to the facts and styling of the way F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote this timeless classic American tale from the late teens and 1920s Jazz Age.

Set in 1917 in both New York City and Long Island, there is the established old-money rich and the nouveau riche. Nick Carraway (Noah J. Ricketts) has just arrived from Minnesota and needs a place to stay, but Manhattan is expensive. He finds there is a little cottage to be rented out by Jay Gatsby (Jeremy Jordan). Gatsby would be new money and he has done everything in his power to reclaim his former love Daisy Buchanan (Eva Noblelzada), now married to Tom Buchanan (John Zdrojeski) who represents old money. Daisy’s father refused to let Daisy marry Jay because he was penniless. So, he went and fought in World War I. Although Tom is very abusive and has constant affairs, including the one with Myrtle Wilson (Sarah Chase)—the local floozy in Queens, who is married to gas-pump jockey George Wilson (Paul Whitty). He thought he was a better match for Daisy. In the mix is also Jordan Baker (Samantha Pauly) who befriends Nick.

Life on the outside is luscious parties galore, champagne is flowing and it was the Jazz Age. That party lasted the whole summer of 1917, when all things and disillusionments started setting in. All the rich people were really quite evil, life and death were meaningless and love was just bounced around as a plaything not to be taken seriously. Jay Gatsby was the best of the best of them and the ultimate loser. He even built that eternal “green light” for Daisy that only he could see from his balcony.

The book by Kait Kerrigan follows F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous narrative almost perfectly. The score by Jason Howland and Nathan Tysen is melodic, grand and lush. Marc Bruni’s direction is a delight but some of the comedic segments could have been left out.

Which brings us to the two leads: Jeremy Jordan has never been in finer voice and his stage presence was never felt so profoundly. Eva Noblezada has outshined all her screen predecessors, portraying Daisy with the right mix of strength and vulnerability. They make a dynamic duo indeed.

What gives lushness to the proceedings is Paul Tate De Poo III’s scenic and projection designs. They transform you to other worlds, and Linda Cho’s costumes are innovative and a delight.

For a grand musical and a fun night at the theatre, The Great Gatsby is the ticket. It is a rare gem and one of the 2024 season’s best new musicals.

There is an infectious vitality to & Juliet that is off the charts. It has a great and actually funny, irreverent book by David West Read and a catchy score from start to finish by Max Martin & friends. No spoiler alert here, but the score includes Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time” and “Oops…I Did It Again”, Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” & “Roar” as well as the Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody” and more surprises.

As Shakespeare wrote it, Romeo takes his poison and dies. Juliet awakens from her drugged coma, learns from Friar Laurence of what happened, and stabs herself to death. The end. Well, not in this version. Juliet (Lorna Courtney) wakes up and figures things out for herself. Why should she kill herself? And it was selfish of Romeo to kill himself and not wait for her. She intends to live her life. Thus, the merriment unfolds.

Besides Juliet, there are the three other principal protagonists: William Shakespeare (Stark Sands) and Anne Hathaway, not the actress but actually Shakespeare’s wife (Betsy Wolfe). They manipulate how the story should continue now that Juliet is alive. Anne looks at things from the feminist point of view and wants Juliet to experience all the alternatives at her disposal, while William wants to keep the traditional manner in which he conceived it. The third principal is Melanie La Barrie as the Nurse.

As the play progresses, different characters are introduced that alter Juliet’s life and if she should even remarry. Even Romeo (Ben Jackson Walker) is resurrected and makes another plea for Juliet’s hand in marriage. Decisions, decisions.

With further alterations by William and Anne, Juliet leaves Verona for Paris to flee her parents and encounters Francois (Philippe Arroyo), the dejected son of Lance (Paulo Szot), a man of high importance in the courts of Paris. Lance forces Francoise to make him proud by marrying Juliet. One problem, though: Francoise is gay and in love with May (Justin David Sullivan) who happens to be Juliet’s BFF. Lance in younger days had an affair with Juliet’s nurse. Messy. Messy. Not to worry; things do sort themselves out.

As I mentioned the premise is great, the score delightful, and the performances in some cases are good, except for the over hamming by most. Lorna Courtney delivers her songs “Oops!…I Did It Again” and “Roar” like a finalist on The Voice and not so much as the character, Juliet. Betsy Wolfe is a consummate Broadway pro and really gives Anne the boost for feminism that the character requires. She is in great voice and far superior to her British counterpart in the London version we saw this summer. Stark Sands as William is raffish enough, but lacks the spark and passion needed for William to be compelling.

The surprise of the evening is Paulo Szot, best known for his 2008 Tony-winning performance as Emile De Becque in South Pacific. He is a wonderful baritone who seems to be enjoying himself in the part of Lance singing and precision dancing as a boy band singer. He delivers a delightful performance.

This musical is further enhanced by its creative team. Set designer Soutra Gilmour has created original, unorthodox, seamless, cluttered but easy-on-the-eye sets. The costumes by Paloma Young are colorful. Lighting Designer Howard Hudson captures every mood, night or day. Choreographer, Jennifer Weber has injected so much energy and originality in her dances. Director Luke Sheppard keeps the merriment going and unfolding at every scene, but in his English version, the supporting cast was tighter and more focused than the freewheeling in this version.

The surprises keep coming, the fun rolls along, and remember in this version it is Juliet, not Romeo.

Jukebox musicals that attempt to tell the story of a superstar while weaving hit songs into a narrative are always problematic in nature.  Sometimes jukebox bio-musicals work brilliantly (such as Tina and Jersey Boys) or they miss the mark completely.  Attempting a jukebox bio of an artist as iconic, enigmatic and controversial as the late Michael Jackson is inherently an ambitious effort, particularly with a book writer as first rate as Lynn Nottage.  However, while MJ fails as a solid bio-musical, it has enough of his hits to please MJ fans and tourists and is a crowd-pleaser, if nothing else.

One wonders why the producers chose to include a book and story when Michael Jackson has enough of a classic songbook to fill an entire show as a revue.  Think of past Broadway revues of songs that were huge hits like Smokey Joe’s Café (featuring the songs of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller) and Ain’t Misbehavin’, starring the late Nell Carter. More recently we had After Midnight in 2013 as well as the long-running Michael Jackson revue Thriller Live on London’s West End, featuring hits by the Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson.  All that would be needed for MJ could have been a recreation of all his iconic hit songs spanning the decades and that would certainly have sufficed, without the need for a book or story line.  The show, if simply a revue, would have thrilled his fans and easily run for years.  Instead, what we have here is another messy jukebox musical with an awkward book that sanitizes the truth.  MJ is not the first bio-musical to sugarcoat a music legend’s life.  Remember the Janis Joplin musical A Night with Janis Joplin a few years ago?  That show, “approved” by her estate, portrayed Joplin as an almost saintly figure and barely mentioned her pesky little heroin addiction.

MJ was produced “by special arrangement with the Estate of Michael Jackson,” so there was no way the show ever intended to give anything resembling the “real” Michael Jackson.  Here, he is portrayed as a “victim” of the media.  The story focuses on his Dangerous Tour in 1993 as he tells everything to an MTV reporter interviewing him for a documentary.  We have three versions of Michael here: Early Motown Michael (Christian Wilson), who is perfect in voice and movement. Next is “Thriller” Michael (Tavon Olds-Sample), impressive in voice and manner, if a bit too terrified of his father Joe (Quentin Earl Darrington) by that point. Finally, we have the 1993 “victimized” Michael (Myles Frost).  Mr. Frost has some of the physical qualities of Michael Jackson down well, from his wispy voice and quirky mannerisms to his famous “robot” and “moonwalk” dances.  However, Mr. Frost lacks Michael Jackson’s magnetism.

As a biographical musical that attempts to encapsulate a certain time in the superstar’s life, MJ fails. Derek McLane’s set (mostly a dreary rehearsal hall) is often drab, Christopher Wheeldon’s direction is all over the place, and Jason Michael Webb’s musical direction and orchestrations are inconsistent.  Granted, recreating Michael’s iconic pop songs and videos is no easy task, but it is difficult to know what is prerecorded here and what is live.  MJ is a true “thriller” for diehard Michael Jackson fans who simply want to see covers of his classics, such as recreating the Jackson 5 singing “ABC” on TV’s “Soul Train.”  The show works best when it aims for pure nostalgia.

Broadway has reopened with a lot of fanfare and shows announcing at the onset “we’re reopening Broadway.” Most of the reopening shows are musicals that have survived the Broadway closure of 19 months, and new shows that have opened are the proverbial canaries that are sent down the coalmine to see if it’s safe. Ironically, the show that was ready to open the night Broadway totally shut down back in March 2020 was Six. So, the only show that has the right to claim “Broadway has officially reopened” is Six. It has definitely been worth the wait.

Here is an original musical that I had the great pleasure to see in June 2019 in London with my partner. My first thought back then was that it would be a crime if this show didn’t transfer to Broadway, to which my partner replied “would it be as meaningful to American audiences as it is in Britain?” Let me give you a resounding yes. Never has English history been as entertaining as is demonstrated in Six. It does for the history of the House of Tudor and the British throne what Hamilton did for American history—it actually makes history fun. This is no easy task in 2021, a time when some know very little about world history prior to the year 2000, let alone the 1500s. Six entices younger generations, weaned on social media and memes for most of their information, to turn off their smartphones for 90 minutes, experience live theater and learn about the past. It is also pure joy for audiences of all ages—a life-affirming, colorful tonic bringing hope and light to a city and world just now coming back after nearly two years of a bleak, dark pandemic.

Written by Toby Marlowe and Lucy Moss, the premise is which of Henry VIII’s wives had the worst lot in life being married to Henry as illustrated in the brilliant opening number “Divorced, Beheaded, Survived.” This song sets the tone and the mood that is about to unfold. There is Catherine of Aragon (Adrianna Hicks), divorced; Anne Boleyn (Andrea Macasaet), beheaded; Jane Seymour (Abby Mueller),  died of complications from childbirth; Anna of Cleves (Brittney Mack), survived; Katherine Howard (Courtney Mack), beheaded; and finally, Catherine Parr (Anna Uzele); survived.

The score is an absolute delight from The Queens’ opening “Ex-Wives” to their closing number “Six.” The sound and rhythm are both so infectious and reminiscent of the 1990s “girl power” pop group The Spice Girls, but with better voices, singing and dancing. The choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille and direction by Lucy Moss and Jamie Armitage both constantly keep the queens on the move and the action never lags.

Not since Moulin Rouge has there been such exquisite costumes (Gabriella Slade) and brilliant lighting (Tim Deiling) on Broadway. Though not as epic, but still eye-popping and visually appealing. The Ladies in Waiting consists of an all-female band with a sound that makes it hard to sit still in your seat.

The six queens are all brilliant with their own unique individual identity, so it is difficult and unfair to single out one over the other. They all deserve equal kudos and all have rich, vibrant voices and effervescent stage presences. Toward the end of the show, the question is asked what was so great and memorable about Henry VIII? Let me end it with these Six exquisite queens. Long may they reign on Broadway.

Baz Luhrmann’s iconic 2001 film Moulin Rouge! was perhaps the first “jukebox musical” of its kind for Hollywood, released the same year as the ultimate jukebox phenomenon Mamma Mia! on Broadway. In this brilliant stage adaptation, book writer John Logan and director Alex Timbers keep the same storyline but have added many new songs. Set designer Derek McLane has turned the Al Hirschfeld Theatre into a gorgeous replica of the legendary Montmartre nightclub in Paris, complete with a red windmill and glitter galore, like a brothel on steroids.  Moulin Rouge! The Musical “can, can, can” and will give mega-shows like Hamilton and Book of Mormon some stiff competition as far as having hard-to-get, expensive tickets, and the show has already broken box-office records since previews began earlier this summer.

Baz Luhrmann’s brilliantly busy film was always more about style than substance, so if the show’s narrative seems paper-thin and hollow, it’s only because this adaptation is staying true to the film. However, to really enjoy the musical, forget about Nicole Kidman’s Satine, Ewan McGregor’s Christian and John Leguizamo’s Toulouse-Lautrec because the geniuses behind this glorious stage version have completely recalibrated and retooled this reboot for a 2019 audience. Everything about the show is interactive and decadent from the moment one steps inside the Hirschfeld, with men and women sporting corsets and high heels bumping and grinding on stage before the show even begins. The show starts with a proverbial bang, with four sassy ladies belting out “Lady Marmalade,” the cover of the LaBelle song that Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Pink and Mya and Missy Elliot took to the top of the pop charts when the film opened 18 years ago.

Here, we have the golden-voiced Tony winner Karen Olivo as Satine, and her interpretation of the aging Parisian cabaret courtesan is much darker and less glamorous than Ms. Kidman’s but is equally heartbreaking.  When she descends upon the stage from a swing that comes down from the ceiling, belting Shirley Bassey’s “Diamonds Are Forever,” amped up by powerful mikes, it’s as thrilling as seeing Beyoncé, Madonna or any pop superstar making a grand concert entrance. Ms. Olivo’s lush vocals are one of the musical’s greatest assets. Aaron Tveit—who has come a long way indeed since Catch Me If You Can more than a decade ago—is great as the idealistic, broke young songwriter Christian, yet both he and Ms. Olivo do not have a lot of chemistry together, but somehow they make it work. Come to Moulin Rouge! The Musical for the “wow” factor of the music, Sonya Tayeh’s dazzling choreography and all the eye-popping spectacle, but just like the movie, don’t expect great drama.

The story revolves around how Harold Zidler (the delightful Danny Burstein), the quirky owner of Moulin Rouge, is facing financial ruin with the club in 1899. The only hope of saving the business is the smarmy Duke of Monroth (Tam Matu), who has plenty of cash to invest but demands the affections of Satine in return. This is a problem because Christian falls madly in love with her, so she must choose between him and the villainous duke.

Much of the fun experiencing Moulin Rouge! The Musical, besides Catherine Zuber’s splendid costumes, is hearing all the song snippets from recent hits like Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World),” to name a few.  Some of the movie’s few original songs remain, most notably “Come What May,” Christian and Satine’s haunting love ballad, but it is truly a shame that Satine’s solo number, “One Day I’ll Fly Away,” was cut as that song was a show-stopper for Nicole Kidman in the film.

In addition, too many newer songs have been added to mention, but the opener in Act II, Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance,” contains one of the most thrilling pieces of sexy choreography you have seen in a long time.

Other iconic parts of the film, like Australian pop star Kylie Minogue as the “Green Fairy” trilling “The Sound of Music,” could not be included for obvious technical reasons. However, Ms. Olivo does a great job doubling as the little fairy (here, she descends from the ceiling in one number) when Christian decides to drown his sorrows in the trippy alcoholic concoction absinthe.

Some of the supporting cast members are not as powerful as others. For example, Sahr Ngaujah (Fela!) seems too strong and able-bodied as Toulouse-Lautrec, the physically challenged painter whose portrayal by John Leguizamo was far superior in the film. However, it would be petty to quibble about the minor shortcomings of this stage adaptation because, thanks to the precise direction of Alex Timbers and his crackerjack team, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a pop-culture pastiche, and a colorful, energetic, endlessly creative ride from beginning to end. It will certainly enjoy a well-deserved long, vibrant run on Broadway.
